"Yope from Norway" is the first segment of the fiftieth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Gus becomes jealous of Yope, a Norwegian transfer student.

Plot[]

The school learns that a new kid from Norway is coming. This means that Gus is no longer the designated "new kid" of the school. While happy to have this stigma removed from him, he suddenly begins wondering what that means for him in the long run. His friends tell him that it means that he is just "Gus" and nothing more, concerning him. Gus attempts to try and create a new image for himself, only for Spinelli to point out that he has toilet paper stuck to his foot. The new student is named Yope Halberson and is paired with Gus to be shown around the school. Yope is fascinated by Third Street, especially by Gus who he thinks is a "cool kid" and Gus decides to play this up.

Gus tries to instill in Yope that he is considered cool by the school while also trying to avoid his friends and bullies who would most likely out him as a regular kid. Eventually, they run into Lawson and his crew who challenge Yope to tetherball. To everyone's surprise, Yope is an expert in the game and swiftly beats Lawson before revealing that he thinks that Gus is the "cool kid" causing everyone to laugh for thinking such a thing. Gus is humiliated and Yope finds himself being surrounded by the rest of the kids at Third Street who begin referring to him as the "cool kid" of the school.

After a week, Yope is set to take a group photo before he leaves, but Gus is not there. Realizing why he lied about his status at the school, Yope goes to search for Gus and finds him hiding in the cheese block at recess. He tells Gus that he does not care that he is not a cool kid as he has a friend back home in Norway who also just so happens to be named Gus and also was just a regular kid like him. Realizing that Yope likes him for just being him, they renew their friendship and promise to stay in touch with one another. The class takes a group photo with Yope and Gus palling with each other.

Cast[]

Trivia[]

  • On Disney+ and outside the U.S., this episode is first next to "The Library Kid". This change is perplexing, but not too radical as it depicts the first appearance of Bonky who appears in its aired pairing episode "Bonky Fever".
  • There was originally going to be a scene where Miss Grotke is attempting to speak Norwegian to Yope, but the scene was cut due to time constraints.
