Tron: Solar Sailer is a game that was released by Mattel for the Intellivision in 1982. The game is one of four released for the console that required the Intellivoice module. (The other three were Space Spartans, B-17 Bomber, and Bomb Squad.)
Tron Family of Intellivision Games[]
Tron: Solar Sailer was one of three 1982 Intellivision games based on the film; Tron: Deadly Discs, and Tron: Maze-a-Tron were the other two. Deadly Discs is often hailed the greatest of the three, while many gamers considered both Solar Sailer and Maze-a-Tron overly complicated. The controls for Deadly Discs, for example, could be readily deciphered from its keypad overlay. In contrast, both Solar Sailer and Maze-a-Tron required careful study of their instructions for proper play.
Gameplay[]
The game begins by giving the player a code. The player then progresses to a grid-like area where they must navigate their solar sailer. The grid is swarming with spiders and tanks, which hinder the player with melee and ranged attacks, respectively. Although the player can shoot these enemies, doing so quickly drains their energy. Therefore, avoiding contact and dodging shots is often the most efficient way of navigating the grid. When the player reaches the correct sector, they may enter their code to move on.
