Tron: Ares is an upcoming American science-fiction film directed by Joachim Rønning and written by Jesse Wigutow. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and is a sequel to Tron: Legacy.
It is set to be released October 10, 2025.
Synopsis[]
The film follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.[1]

- Greta Lee as Eve Kim, Human lead of the story. A tech genius, focused and full of Open Heart, analytical and observant. One of the world's best programmers. Reclusive, anti social, the way she connects with Ares isn't romantic but sympathetic connection.[3][5]
- Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena, Imposing, cold and officious, driven solely by an innate urge. Open to fulfill any directive she is given without question, Athena is a member of an elite special forces unit and second in command. When Athena senses her superior has strayed from their assignment, she reports him without hesitation and quickly assumes his leadership role, intent on destroying him and fulfilling the directive at all costs. With incredible power and the inability to fear or doubt, Athena is nearly an unstoppable force, and a tragic figure.[3][6][7]
- Cameron Monaghan as Canus, A battle worn soldier who suddenly experiences fear during an open battle and begins to question the meaning of war. His superior witnesses this unprecedented behavior and shows him sympathy.[3][8]

Production[]

On April 2010, a third film was announced to be in development, with Joe Kosinski returning as director with a script written by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.[12] On January 2011, it was announced that a short film was being made as a trailer for the third film.[13] Joe Kosinski stated in April that the script was underway, while confirming that the movie will continue on after Tron: Legacy ended.[14] On June 2012, Horowitz and Kitsis confirmed that they were still involved with the third film, while repeating that Quorra will be one of the primary characters in the plot.[15]
On March 2019, co-producer Justin Springer confirmed that development on the project is ongoing.[16] On June 2020 the Walt Disney Studios President of Music & Soundtracks, Mitchel Leib, stated that while the studio hopes that Joe Kosinski will return to the franchise, the studio is currently searching for a director. On July 2020, The DisInsider provided an update on the project confirming that Leto and the cast from Tron: Legacy will co-star in the film. On August 2020, it was announced that Garth Davis will serve as director, with a script written by Jesse Wigutow. In addition. to Jared Leto's role as one of the main characters, he will serve as co-producer with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.
On January 19, 2023, Deadline reported that Joachim Rønning had been hired to direct the film after Garth Davis left the project, with Leto still attached to star. Filming is scheduled to begin in August 2023 in Vancouver, Canada.[17][18] Steven Lisberger revealed that he would be taking an "Obi-Wan-like role" with the third movie.[19]
On August 15, 2023, Rønning confirmed that filming was in indefinite hiatus due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which resulted in the layoff of over 150 employees. He hopes that production will commence once the strikes have ended.[20] Following the strikes ending, it was announced that filming would begin after the 2023 holidays.[21]
On January 19, 2024, Rønning announced that filming had officially resumed.[22]
On February 29, 2024, a first look image was released on the film with a tentative release date announced for 2025, and that Hasan Minhaj and Arturo Castro joined the cast in undisclosed roles.[1]
On April 5, 2024, it was announced that the film would be released October 10, 2025.[23]
On April 29, 2024, Jeff Bridges confirmed that he was reprising his role as Kevin Flynn for the movie.[11]
On May 6, 2024, Joachim Rønning announced that filming had officially wrapped.[24]
