"The Experiment" is the first segment of the second episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
The gang hear a chilling story of what older students like to do with their time, and the only solution is for two of the six to disprove it in the world's most "unusual" experiment: kissing.
Plot[]
T.J., Vince, Mikey and Gus retell the story of little Jimmy Kratner, a boy who was supposedly abducted by aliens. They all proceed to mock one another over the various tall tale like stories that they have heard in their lifetime until they are interrupted by the arrival of Butch, who noticeably has a streak of white in his hair. He belittles their knowledge before telling them what had happened to him; he was in the basement spying on his older brother who had come down with a girl. Not realizing what they were doing, he witnessed the two of them kiss, which resulted in the streak in his hair. The boys disbelieve his story, but he leaves them with the truth that when they all grow up, they too will succumb to their urges in wanting to kiss girls.
The boys reunite with and tell Spinelli and Gretchen about what Butch told them and they too disbelieve his story. Despite Mikey being the only one open to romantic relationships, they decide to ignore it and go and play with the other kids. However, throughout the day, they all begin to think on it, causing them to get distracted. They realize that the subject of kissing and falling in love is playing on their minds too much and Gretchen comes to the most sensible conclusion: they must perform an experiment by getting one boy and one girl to kiss one another and see if it causes any effects. Vince suggests drawing straws to decide which of them will do it. T.J. and Spinelli end up having to do it, much to their horror.
T.J. and Spinelli are both made up to look nice for the kiss and arrive at school early so that no one will see them. However, they hear giggling nearby and loudly demand that whoever is there to come out. It turns out that Vince, Mikey, Gretchen and Gus told most of their classmates who have all come to see the results of the experiment. They at first suggest doing it somewhere else after school, but figure that getting it out of the way is better. T.J. and Spinelli kiss and find that they both hate it, much to everyone's relief. Now knowing, or rather thinking, that Butch was wrong, they all happily head into class and agree not to believe in anymore weird stories like Jimmy Kranter. After entering the school, the aliens suddenly drop Jimmy Kratner off so that he can attend class.
