Heath Andrew Ledger was an Australian actor. He got his start in Australian film and television before moving to Hollywood to to make American films. He gained recognition for his roles in The Patriot, A Knight's Tale, Monster's Ball, Brokeback Mountain, Lords of Dogtown, and I'm Not There.
He became widely known for his unusual casting as The Joker in The Dark Knight, for which he was lauded. Unfortunately, he died from acute combined drug intoxication before the release of the film. His performance would earn him a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor. He was in the middle of filming Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he died, resulting in the director creatively having close friends Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell fill in for him during certain fantasy sequences.
For Disney, he appeared in two Touchstone Pictures films playing Patrick Verona in 10 Things I Hate About You, and Giacomo Casanova in Casanova. Additionally, he appeared in Miramax Films productions playing Harry Faversham in The Four Feathers, and Jake Grimm in The Brothers Grimm. For 20th Century Fox, he played Alex Bernier in The Order.
