The Hammer and Pencil Birds are minor characters in Alice in Wonderland.
Role in the Film[]
The birds first appear in the Tulgey Wood, making signs for Alice that read "Don't step on the Mome Raths". They are later seen crying for Alice when she sings "Very Good Advice". They are not seen again after that.
Alice's Wonderland Bakery[]
The birds are frequent recurring characters in the show. One of the characters Milly has a pet hammer bird named Bop.
Disney Parks[]
Disneyland Resort[]
On the Alice in Wonderland dark ride, inside of the Tulgey Wood scene, Hammer Birds can be found alongside other creatures of the Tulgey Wood, where two Hammer Birds can be seen hammering nails onto signs that tell the riders to watch out. Before the attraction was closed for its refurbishment on March 10, 2014, a figure of a Pencil Bird could be seen on a branch writing "WHICH WAY" on a sign being held by a Glasses Bird. After the ride reopened on July 4, 2014, the Pencil Bird figure was replaced with a figure of Alice. The Pencil Bird figure was moved to the beginning of the Tulgey Wood scene writing the “This Way” sign, amongst the other various signs that appear. Two statues of Hammer Birds can also be found perched right above the Cheshire Cat statue's hole in the castle that encases the Alice in Wonderland ride.
Disneyland Paris[]
A Hammer Bird audio-animatronic can be found on the Tulgey Wood scene of the maze attraction Alice's Curious Labyrinth. It acts similarly to how it does at the Alice in Wonderland dark ride at Disneyland Resort, where it is on a sign hammering a nail into a sign.
Trivia[]
- A pencil bird appeared in Donald in Mathmagic Land, but it looks almost completely different. It was slightly taller than Donald; it has a longer, less detailed pencil with a pink lead for ahead, a clear set square triangle for its entire body without a tail or wings (therefore making it flightless); and longer, thinner legs and toes without back toes. It challenged Donald to a game of Tic-tac-toe and won. It could be argued that this pencil bird was related to the genus found in Wonderland but was of a different species, like how birds in real life are related yet could look totally different to one another
- Pencil birds resembling this one appear as enemies in World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
- Hammer birds appear among the enemies of The Ocean level in the Japanese version of Mickey Mousecapade. They are replaced by regular birds in the US version.
- The pencil birds made an appearance in the House of Mouse episode "Chip 'n' Dale" when they help Mickey draw a line to prevent Donald from crossing until the end of the show.
- Even though the Tulgey Wood birds never speak, the Italian dub has an offscreen narrator translating the sign, "Don't step on the Mome Raths" in a somewhat spooky voice.
