Encanto is the official motion picture soundtrack to Disney's 2021 animated feature film of the same name. Digitally released by Walt Disney Records on November 19, 2021 and followed by a physical release on December 17, the album features music composed by Germaine Franco along with eight original songs written for the film by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Background[]
In June 2020, American singer-songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, who had previously worked on Moana (2016), revealed that he had begun to write the music for Encanto, which would have eight original songs in both Spanish and English.[1] After the film's premiere, Miranda disclosed that he had been writing songs for the film from the very beginning. On September 8, 2021, Germaine Franco, co-composer of the songs from Coco (2017), began to score the film.[2] Drawing from Colombian music scenes, the soundtrack incorporates genres such as salsa, tango, vallenato, cumbia, reggaeton and rock en español with pop, hip hop, folk and musical theatre styles, and makes use of traditional music instruments of Colombia—where the film is set.
The album was a commercial success, surging in popularity after Encanto was made available on Disney+ following its theatrical run. The album topped the US Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming the sixth soundtrack of an animated film in history to achieve the feat. It also reached number one in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and reached the top ten in Austria, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Eight of its songs entered the Billboard Hot 100, of which "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and "Surface Pressure" reached the top ten and peaked at numbers one and eight, respectively.
