Captain Marvel is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film was released on March 8, 2019. It is the 21st installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the ninth installment in Phase Three.
Plot[]
In 1995, on the Kree Empire's capital planet of Hala, warrior and Starforce member Vers suffers from recurring nightmares involving an older woman. Yon-Rogg, her mentor and commander, warns her to control her abilities while the Supreme Intelligence, an organic artificial intelligence who acts as the ruler of the Kree, urges her to keep her emotions in check.
While working with official Ronan the Accuser to rescue an undercover spy, Vers is abducted and subjected to a memory probe by a group of Skrulls, alien shapeshifters with whom the Kree Empire is at war. Vers escapes and, after leaving the Skrulls' ship in an escape pod, crash lands on Earth. Her presence attracts the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, whose investigation is interrupted by a Skrull attack. In the ensuing chase, Vers recovers a crystal containing her memories and Fury kills a Skrull impersonating Coulson. Fury later meets and agrees to work with Vers while Skrull commander Talos disguises himself as S.H.I.E.L.D. operative Keller.
Using Fury's security clearance, Vers learns she was a pilot who is presumed to have died six years earlier while testing an experimental light-speed engine designed by scientist Wendy Lawson, who she recognizes as the woman from her nightmares. The two escape after "Keller" confronts them, with Lawson's cat Goose stowing away, and pilot a small cargo jet to Louisiana. A meeting with fellow pilot Maria Rambeau and her young daughter Monica reveals Vers' real name is Carol Danvers.
Talos, who had tracked her, arrives and asks to speak. Using the black-box recorder of Lawson's crashed plane, Danvers learns an alien spaceship had shot it down - and she now remembers Yon-Rogg killing Lawson, as well as Lawson's warning that the experimental engine's energy-core had to be destroyed to keep it from the wrong hands. Vers shot it and was caught in an ensuing explosion, with her body absorbing the energy. Yon-Rogg brought the amnesiac "Vers" - the remaining portion of "Danvers" on her broken dog tag - to Hala.
Talos explains the Skrulls are simply refugees, and Lawson's engine was to help them escape beyond Kree reach. Using coordinates Lawson had given Danvers, she, along with Fury, Monica, and Goose - who for some reason terrifies Talos - fly their Skrull-modified cargo jet to a cloaked ship in orbit. There they find the source of the energy-core's power, the Tesseract - and some Skrull refugees, including Talos' wife and child. Yon-Rogg's Starforce, having tracked them, captures Danvers and places her in VR before the Supreme Intelligence. Enraged at being used, Danvers fights back, and discovers that a Kree implant that purportedly gave her Kree powers was instead limiting them.
Accessing her full force, Danvers escapes, gives the Tesseract to Fury for safekeeping, and battles the Starforce to give Rambeau time to fly herself, Fury, and the Skrulls to Earth - along with Goose, who is not a cat but an alien known as a Flerken that can sprout powerful tentacles and whose insides are a pocket dimension where the Tesseract is placed. Rambeau shoots down a pursuing Minn-Erva. Danvers chases an escaping Yon-Rogg and discovers the extent of her powers, including flight. She singlehandedly destroys multiple ballistic missiles that Ronan, called in by Yon-Rogg, has fired at Earth, and forces Ronan's forces to retreat. On Earth, Danvers quickly defeats Yon-Rogg and sends him back to Hala with a warning to the Supreme Intelligence.
Danvers agrees to help the Skrulls find a new homeworld, giving Fury a modified pager with which to contact her in an emergency. Fury later drafts a proposal for an initiative, changing the name after finding a photo with Danvers' old call sign of "Avenger". In a present-day mid-credits scene, Danvers meets Avengers Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner, and James Rhodes, who were monitoring the pager Fury had activated. In an end-credits flashback, Goose coughs up the Tesseract.

Production[]
In March 2014, Kevin Feige confirmed "[they had] talked a lot" about the character headlining their first film with a female protagonist, while acknowledging she had taken on the mantle of Captain Marvel in the comics.[1] Later, he mentioned Captain Marvel as one of the films he is asked the most about from fans.[2]
It was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con on July 18, 2016 that Brie Larson would play the lead of the film.
On July 6, 2017, rumors were confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson would reprise his role as the character Nick Fury and co-star alongside Brie Larson.[3]
At the San Diego Comic-Con on July 22, 2017, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said that 'Captain Marvel' will be set in the 1990s. The panel also revealed concept art for the production.
The movie started production in Atlanta on January 8, 2018, and will use Pinewood Atlanta Studios as its home base.[4]
On September 5, 2018, Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive first look on Larson's Captain Marvel, and confirmed Ben Mendelsohn's casting as the Skrull's leader, Talos.

Pinar Toprak signed on to compose the film's score in June 2018, making her the first woman to score a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Toprak began by creating the title character's theme, before developing themes for the Kree and the Skrulls, whom she tried to connect in order to "find the universe" for the film's scenes in space and Earth. Toprak wanted Captain Marvel's theme to be recognizable from its first two notes. In addition to Toprak's score, the film's soundtrack includes Alan Silvestri's theme from The Avengers; Michael Giacchino's Marvel Studios Fanfare, which is played over the Marvel Studios logo and referenced during Stan Lee's cameo appearance; and songs from the 1990s.

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 78% based on 473 reviews and an average rating of 6.8/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Packed with action, humor, and visual thrills, Captain Marvel introduces the MCU's latest hero with an origin story that makes effective use of the franchise's signature formula."

- The Marvel logo at the start of the film is dedicated to Stan Lee, whom appears as his numerous roles as the Informant in place of the characters. The screen then goes black with the line "Thank You Stan."
- The Kree are shown to be worse monsters than previously shown in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with their genocidal attacks on the Skrulls.
- It is revealed Fury lost his eye from a cat scratch. His injury was first alluded to in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

- It is implied Fury would get promoted to Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. due to the events of the film; given the fact he's meet and had combat experience with aliens who have superior technology and abilities. Thus making him the most qualified in terms of strategic defense.
- Behind the Scenes, it was confirmed Fury would dress in trench coat within the next decade due to being inspired by Talos's look.
