Orphan is an unborn Valeronian baby who was exposed to energy from The Source in the womb. He was one of Mongul's champions and advisors but defected to Superman's rebellion.

Orphan's parents were scientists studying the Source Wall. When the Wall was breached, his parents were obliterated but the family's "technofamiliar" Darling saved Orphan's life by assimilating his mother's body and forming an artificial womb around him. They were saturated with energy from the Source, giving Orphan great power. Orphan and Darling were found by Teacher and taken back to Warworld.

Teacher developed the Orphan Boxes and other powerful weapons by studying Orphan, and Mongul considered the baby his most valuable asset.

Orphan controlled Darling during the battle with the Authority, and killed Lightray when she tried to "rescue" him.

Later, Superman's rebels breached Teacher's laboratory and destroyed Darling. Orphan fell into a catatonic state when Darling was destroyed, and so the rebels captured him and took him back to their headquarters. Orphan eventually awoke and agreed to help the rebels if they would reunite him with Darling. He helped them rescue June Moone from Mother's lair and even used his powers to teleport the demon queen away from them.

Orphan and Natasha Irons were able to communicate with John Henry Irons through a fragment of Genesis on Earth. They helped him develop a way to filter the mutative radiation out of Genesis and use the refined energy to heal Thao-La, a Phaelosian refugee on Earth. They realised they could use that same process to filter Genesis through Warworld's Star Forges. The resulting white sun would not only restore Superman's powers but also grant powers to all the Phaelosian slaves on Warworld, giving the rebels the advantage they needed to overthrow Mongul.

They built the device they needed and went to Star City One, but Teacher was waiting for them, along with Darling who he had reprogrammed to obey him rather than Orphan. However, Orphan simply obliterated Teacher with a wave of energy and reunited with Darling. After Mongul was killed, Orphan became the pilot of Warworld, ferrying the freed slaves back to their homeworlds.
