- Goodbye, Max. Thanks for putting up with me all these years.
Impulse #11 is an issue of the series Impulse (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 1996.
Synopsis for "Dead Heat — Fifth Lap: Breaking the Barrier"
Impulse, Wally West and Jay Garrick focus on the ninjas, while Max Mercury, Johnny Quick and Jesse Quick take on Savitar and Christina Alexandrova directly. As the battle rages on, Jesse is captured by Savitar. He reveals that he is impressed with her and intends to make her his priestess of lightning. Hearing this, Christina is overcome with murderous jealousy. She moves to kill Jesse. John sees he cannot reach his daughter in time to save her, but still runs to her. In that moment, for the first time, he admits the existence of the Speed Force, abandons his formula, and is granted the speed he needs. He is able to reach Jesse just in time to save her from Christina. However, he has pushed himself too far and is pulled into the Speed Force. Max runs into the Speed Force trying to save John, but they both know it is too late. John apologizes to Max for being a bad student of the Speed Force and tells Max he was a good teacher. He then tells Max to tell his daughter that he loves her and will always be a part of her now, as part of the Speed Force, more than ever. With that, he is absorbed into the Speed Force. Back at the castle, Jesse screams for her father, but when Max returns, she realizes he is gone. She collapses into Max's arms in grief.
In the end, Christina and the ninjas are defeated, leaving just Savitar, who takes off to kill Linda Park.
