- I come from a place where no one has to live in fear... Where no one has to apologize for being without! A place where people help the less fortunate... rather than torment them.
- — Huntress
Huntress #16 is an issue of the series Huntress (Volume 1) with a cover date of July, 1990.
Synopsis for "Welcome to the Wrecking Ball"
A woman squatting in Helena Bertinelli's building returns to find a gang of thugs attacking the other squatters as well as Huntress and the Waterfront Warrior. Together, Huntress and the Warrior defeat the gang, but the squatters have all run away, and the gang threatens to burn the building to ashes.
Afterwards, as Waterfront Warrior is speaking to the woman, Huntress realizes that she's heard some of his words before. She discovers that the Warrior is actually her building's superintendent Hector Ruiz. Later, Helena visits her therapist, Dr. Evelyn Rosen, and worries aloud that others might follow in her example, or worse, an inexperienced hero like Hector.
As planned, the Waterfront Warrior appears on the Mike Cobb show. He answers his interview questions with poise, but for every instance that he has done good, Angelo Brancati's thugs have used underhanded methods to make them appear negative. The thugs planted drugs in the home of a woman who he saved from leaving her baby in a dumpster, they attacked the squatters in his building, and even as the show continues, the thugs set fire to that same building. To Cobb's surprise, the Warrior leaves the set and heads to the burning building.
A woman struggles to escape the burning building, and nearly falls to her death until she is saved by Huntress. When the Waterfront Warrior gets to the scene, he is held back, and unable to prevent any further damage. Huntress tracks down the thugs who set the blaze, and beats information about their boss out of them.
Disguised as a rich woman, Helena meets with Angelo Brancati under the pretense of wanting him to devalue her own land in the same way that he has done in the waterfront district. She manages to get Brancati to openly state his complicity in the gang activity and violence in the area, and leaves.
Detective O'Shea attempts to perform stand-up comedy as a supplement to his police work. He is not well received, but outside, he is confronted by the Huntress, who passes him a video tape she made of her meeting with Brancati. He reminds her that he has orders to take her in when he sees her. She responds that he shouldn't quit his day job.
Later, Hector Ruiz finds a note on his door reminding him that he doesn't need a mask to be a hero for his people.
