All-American Comics #20 is an issue of the series All-American Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of November, 1940.

Synopsis for Green Lantern: "Mystery at Apex Studios"

Jim Tellum, radio announcer at Apex Broadcasting System, is gunned down in the street by unknown assailants. Alan Scott, intrigued by the newspaper reports, transforms into the Green Lantern and pays a visit to Tellum's widow. Mrs. Tellum reveals that her husband wanted to escape a racket led by "the Boss." Suddenly, a shot rings out, and Mrs. Tellum is killed. Green Lantern pursues the killer's vehicle and stops the car with his power ring. The man, fearing for his life, tells the Green Lantern that this was his first job for the Boss and that he was given his orders by mail. Green Lantern calls the police and tells them about Mrs. Tellum's situation, and the location of the killer.

The next day, reports in the paper detail that Mrs. Tellum's last words to the police were "Tops" repeated over and over again. To find more information about the case, Scott goes to the Apex Studio to apply for a job. Unfortunately, no positions are open, but Scott bumps into Irene Miller on his way out of the building. They discuss the murder case, and she reveals that Teller advertised for the Tops Toothpaste Company. Alan and Irene head for the toothpaste factory to find more clues.

At the factory, they are surprised at how small and dingy it is. They are soon captured by thugs who throw them in separate cells. Alan powers up his ring and becomes the Green Lantern. Easily flying out of his cell, he discovers that the Boss is using Tops Toothpaste advertisements to give out coded instructions to his underlings. After discussing their plan, the thugs head out for the pier to unload a new shipment with Green Lantern in hot pursuit.

At the pier, the thugs try to shoot GL, but he eludes them and sinks the ship. The police arrive, scattering the thugs. Green Lantern grabs the Duke, the thugs' leader, and forces him to tell the identity of the Boss. Moments later, the Green Lantern flies through the window and confronts Gates, the mastermind behind the racket and the true identity of the Boss. He records the criminal's confession and knocks him out. Returning to Irene as Alan Scott, he frees her from her cell, and the two head back to warn Mr. Gates about the plot. Instead, they find Gates tied up by the Green Lantern and give his confession over to the police. Apex Broadcasting gives Alan a job for his help in the case. Irene expresses her admiration for a hero like the Green Lantern and wonders if he would go for a girl like her. Alan says that, since he likes her, she should be good enough for the Green Lantern.
