All-American Comics #66 is an issue of the series All-American Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of June, 1945.
Synopsis for Green Lantern: "Soles of Manhattan"
A shoe repairman has a client come in to pick up his shoes, who voices disgust at them, only for the shoes to talk back and tell him they're actually the shoes of the god Mercury, and have passed through the hands of a lot of interesting people. One story is its favorite, though.
- The shoes came into the possession of would-be singer Mary Grace, who brushes off the advances of both would-be author Ralph Penn and would-be pro athlete Bill Stronge to focus on her career. In the course of the show, her feet seem to take on a life of her own. Despite feeling humiliated by her impromptu "dance", Mary doesn't realize her eccentric performance actually went over well with the audience. After the show, gangster Ambitious Adolph shows up and kidnaps Mary. Alan Scott's at the show scouting for singing talent, and becomes Green Lantern, but Adolph gets away with his captive when Ralph Penn gets in the way and trips up the hero. Penn's so distraught, he calls Bill Stronge for help, but the athlete's coach won't let him out of training for any reason. However, Stronge is able to tell Penn where the gangster's hideout is (Adolph having tried to bribe Stronge to throw an important game once). Green Lantern's using his powers to tap the wire and hears where the hideout is, then speeds over there himself.
- As he leaves, Penn slips on his worn-out old shoes, and puts on Mercury's shoes as a replacement. Since they're the property of a god, they turn into whatever shoes would suit their owner. Penn shows up in time to see Green Lantern and Doiby mopping up the gangsters, but knocks them out so the criminals escape, protesting that Ambitious Adolph is Bill Stronge's brother. This, along with the note he left for the police to tell them where to look for Mary Grace, which the police mistook for a ransom note, leads the cops to arrest Ralph Penn. In prison, Ralph switches his shoes with Doiby, since they have a secret message for Bill Stronge about Mary being safe. Green Lantern and Doiby agree to deliver the message to Bill before his big football game, and Stronge unknowingly puts on Mercury's shoes himself. During the game, Adolph tries to shoot Bill, still trying to rig the game, but hits the ball instead. Green Lantern attacks Adolph, and in the scuffle that follows, Adolph knocks out Bill Stronge and steals his uniform to try and escape inconspicuously. Lantern realizes the player wearing Bill's number is somebody else and goes after him, and thanks to Mercury's shoes, Adolph ends up running straight into the back of a paddy wagon.
In the present, the wearers of Mercury's shoes all made history. Mary Grace became a successful performer; Ralph Penn made headlines with his "ransom note," but was freed; Bill Stronge became famous for running the wrong way during a big game, while running toward the stands to confront Adolph; and Ambitious Adolph got to dig for treasure at the end of the rainbow, on a prison rock pile. It's then revealed that with the shoes' work done, the guy who came to pick them up from the repair place was Mercury himself.
