Asteroth, also known as Astaroth, is an Archfiend from Hell whose thirst for power possessed him to capture the sorcerer Merlin, bringing him into conflict with the Demon, Etrigan. Losing his position in the Inferno, Asteroth absconded to Earth with the intent to change his ways, only to try and unleash Gotham's own demon upon the city. Asteroth was adapted from the mythological demon of the same name by Alan Grant, first appearing in Action Comics #638 in 1989, but was the key antagonist behind the scenes of The Demon Vol. 2. (1987)
