La prima versione fu pubblicata nel 1742, e nel 1745 fu pubblicata una seconda edizione comprendente altri due "pensieri", l'ottavo e il nono. L'opera contiene varie riflessioni sulla morte scritte in versi e che favoriscono alla creazione di quell'atmosfera cupa, tenebrosa e malinconica tipica della corrente letteraria alla quale il poeta britannico appartiene, iniziando la cosiddetta scuola cimiteriale che proseguirà con Thomas Gray e molti altri. Utwór jest napisany wierszem białym (blank verse), czyli nierymowanym pięciostopowym jambem. Liczy około dziesięciu tysięcy wersów. W XVIII wieku cieszył się niezwykłą popularnością. Był prekursorski wobec romantyzmu.Kolejne części cyklu, w liczbie dziewięciu, noszą tytuły: Life, Death, and Immortality, Time, Death, Friendship, Narcissa The Christian Triumph, The Relapse, The Infidel Reclaim'd (dwie części, Glories and Riches i The Nature, Proof, and Importance of Immortality, Virtue's Apology; or, The Man of the World Answered i The Consolation.
