Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Ixia viridiflora.jpg

I'm just wondering why you moved Albuca fastigiata.JPG to Ixia viridiflora.jpg. You said it was a "misleading name" in the edit summary, but it is a cropped version of Albuca fastigiata in Hobart.jpg, which clearly labels it Albuca fastigiata. What makes you think the label in the Botanical Gardens is wrong? StAnselm (talk) 21:18, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, it was nominated as such by Uleli. I don't know much about plants so I did a google search for both. Albuca fastigiata did not match the images [1][2]. And not just in color, but the whole structure. So I tended to believe Uleli here. According to the description he added the leaves are Albuca fastigiata and the flowers in the background are Ixia viridiflora. Kind regards, Taketa (talk) 09:33, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Seems we caused a problem by simultaneously trying to move this file. Could you fix it please, I´ve to log out now and wouldn´t wait for the admins to delete the redirect you produced. Hi, my first conflict moving files :). I corrected a redirect and now the file is at File:Kolozsvar Marianum Babes Bolyai University.jpg, with 2 redirect linking to it. It would take an admin to move it to File:Kolozsvar Marianum Babeş-Bolyai University.jpg. I think it's not a big difference and it's best to just leave it where it is now. File renaming

Please review Commons:File renaming before renaming files. Make sure that the reason for renaming files is listed there. Otherwise, please avoid renaming files. --  Docu  at 16:45, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Meaningless names are only those generated by cameras. Names of cities are not meaningless (unless it's the wrong city). Harmonizing filenames is generally not permitted. --  Docu  at 17:48, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

File names

Hello, changing file names to descriptive ones: is imo waste of time, in the picture description its already said, categorization is done, no sense to have that in file again, so code is unique, wont come a second time, brgds --Wistula (talk) 19:16, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, files are better accessable if they have a logical name. Commons:File naming advises descriptive names and renaming files to descriptives names is one of the few reasons at Commons:File renaming. Kind regards, Taketa (talk) 19:28, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

Sidewalk photo

They were originally being used to demonstrate gender roles - 'tomboy' vs 'girly girl'. Which is absolutely not appropriate because we don't know anything about who they are or how they identify or anything like that. DS (talk) 10:59, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

It's been pointed out to me that there's enough differentiation in hip structure, even at that age, to identify the hatted child as most likely female. Hello! As a German-speaker myself I'd have to say that no, the name would still be rendered phonetically, i.e. with a "V", in German. "B" is used in English and German only for classical names and terms, because of the long-standing custom of latinizing them. Thanks for your swift handling om my rename request on File:Arvika Trefaldighetskyrkan altar.jpg etc. The new(?) Template:Rename makes it possible to correct ours small but irritating wrong spellings, I discovered this template recently. Renaming

Hi. I am curious on why you moved File:House of Kamehameha V, Waikiki Hale Lama.jpg to File:House of Kamehameha V, Waikiki, Hale Lama.jpg. Renaming guidelines forbids renaming files for making it look slightly better. --Sreejith K (talk) 09:17, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi Sreejith K, I have put the reason for the rename in the edit summary. The uploader requested the rename of the file. Renaming guidelines mention this in the reasons to rename. I do not know why uploader wanted to remove a comma from the file name, but I sincerely feel that that was not needed. A lot of small renamings like this puts a lot of load on the server and also on commons delinker. --Sreejith K (talk) 09:40, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

File movements

Questions about renaming

Hello. You have rejected my request for renaming File:Hokkaido International School.jpg and said "the school in Sapporo is called Hokkaido International School."

File:Hokkaido International School.jpg is the image of I.S.K SAPPORO INTERNATIONAL KINDERGARTEN in Toyohira, Toyohira-ku, Sapporo.

Hokkaido International School is in Hiragishi, Toyohira-ku, Sapporo.

Bedankt! Werkt. Niet veel sneller dan handmatig copypasten maar wel 2 klikjes minder xd. Is er nog een manier om het bericht met de tekst die je als bedankje kunt plaatsen te verwijderen? Why did you move this image? It appears to be the cover of the June 2009 issue, per this link. Since that goes back to a copy of the magazine and the same source as the image, and since the magazine has only been publishing for eight years, what justifies the date change? Hi Fred, you are right, I changed it back and also fixed the file description. When I found the file the description said 1986 and the title 2009. I then had a look at her birthday and her current pictures in order to figure out which was correct. Out of the two dates I thought 2009 must have been the wrong one wrong because she would be 40+ and she did not look like her current pictures. But looking at it in detail now I see it is indeed 2009 and I was wrong. I have changed it back. My mistake. This should not have happenend. Apologies for any inconvenience. Beste Taketa. Weet jij wat ik hier het beste kan doen? Een fotograaf in opdracht van de kunstenaar zelf, heeft een upload als nieuwere versie van mijn afbeelding geplaatst. Ik heb dit teruggedraaid en geadviseerd de afbeelding als nieuw bestand te uploaden, maar ik vrees dat dit problemen gaat geven met de al bestaande versie. Hoi Richardkiwi, een moderator kan deze versie er tussenuit halen en verwijderen. Ik ben geen moderator op Commons. Je kunt een verzoek plaatsen op Commons:Administrators' noticeboard en dan zien de moderatoren dit. Mocht je een Nederlands moderator willen spreken dan kun je ook een verzoek plaatsen op de overlegpagina van een Nederlandstalig moderator, bijvoorbeeld Basvb, Lymantria, Natuur12, Romaine of Trijnstel. Renaming of files

Hallo Taketa, kan het zijn dat deze file dient hernoemd enkel vanwege de spellingsfout of zie ik daar iets belangrijks over het hoofd? Lotje (talk) 17:09, 16 March 2017 (UTC)

Hoi Lotje, wil je de spatie verwijderen? Het bestand kan hernoemd worden, maar ik doe zelf niet snel een hernoeming enkel wegens een missende spatie. Je kunt het aanvragen en een andere hernoemer zal het dan uitvoeren. Met vriendelijke groet, Taketa (talk) 06:03, 17 March 2017 (UTC)

Neen, Taketa, ikzelf zou er niet voor opteren om deze spellingsfout te corrigeren door de file te hernoemen. Vreemd is echter wél dat de file is ondergebracht in de Category:Media requiring renaming without the related template. Waarom eigenlijk, liep ik me af te vragen. Categorization of files

Hoi Lotje, niks mis mee. Ziet er goed uit. Je kunt overwegen om een specifieker onderwerp te nemen. Art is erg breed. Dat kunnen kunstwerken zijn, schilderij en nog veel meer. Overigens bij het aanmaken van een categorie bij voorkeur twee bovenliggende categorieen toevoegen. Dus bij "Quackery in art" zijn dat "Quackery" en "art". Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is weer begonnen!

Beste Taketa,

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is vorige week begonnen! Aan deze fotowedstrijd nemen dit jaar 54 landen deel, waaronder bijvoorbeeld Nederland, Groot Brittannië, Thailand, Rusland, Oekraïne, maar ook de eilanden Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius en Sint Maarten in de Nederlandse Caribean. Je wordt dus van harte uitgenodigd om te kijken tussen de deelnemende landen of jouw vakantieland er ook bij zit dit jaar en je foto's uit die landen ook te delen!

Net als voorgaande jaren hebben we prijzen voor de mooiste foto en de meeste foto's en een keus gemaakt voor een speciale categorie. Heb jij een foto gemaakt van een monument waarvan voor 1 september 2017 nog geen afbeelding op Wikimedia Commons bestond? Dan doet de afbeelding mee in de speciale categorie! Heeft een monument nog geen foto in de monumentenlijst op Wikipedia, dan is het aannemelijk dat we er nog geen foto van hadden. Om het zoeken naar monumenten zonder afbeelding wat makkelijker te maken, kun je op Wikipedia lijsten en een kaart van Nederland vinden.

Tot slot nodigen we je nog van harte uit om volgende week met ons op pad te gaan. Op zaterdag 16 september wandelen we tijdens een Wiki Takes rond in Hoorn: op zondag 17 september doen we hetzelfde in Leiden. Onder ervaren gidsen wandelen we langs monumenten in de stad en nemen we ruimschoots de tijd om de monumenten goed op de foto te zetten. Aanmelden verplicht en plaatsen gelimiteerd!
Tot en met 30 september heb je de tijd om je foto's up te loaden: de top 10 gaat door naar de internationale wedstrijd, waar de hoofdprijs de nieuwste Canon EOS 5D camera is!

Hernoeming account

Beste Taketa, mijn verzoek om mijn account te hernoemen naar "Blackmambalover" werd afgewezen omdat ik meer dan 50.000 edits heb. Er stond "ask a sysop" e.d. dus bij deze. Mijn vraag is dan wel of al mijn statistieken dan wel op die naam komen, zoals 215.000+ markeringen op de Nederlandstalige Wikipedia, 1050 uploads op Wikimedia Commons en 60.000+ edits op de NL-Wikipedia en 1 tot vele edits op de overige (honderden) wiki's. Mocht dit niet kunnen, dan laat ik het zo. Decline it (lol). De reden voor hernoeming is dat een enkeling mijn naam nog steeds in verband brengt met een wat mindere tijd, al een aantal jaren terug, waar ik zelf vind maar deels verantwoordelijk voor te zijn en waar dingen verdraaid zijn, terwijl ik meer goede dan slechte tijden heb gekend, sterker nog, ik heb duizenden en duizenden uren IP-controle gedaan en honderden uren aan foto's maken en artikelen aanmaken waarin de foto's geplaatst moeten worden, enz. enz. (uiteraard hebben veel gebruikers wel een hoop gedaan voor Wikipedia/media, soms nog veel meer dan ik. Een andere reden is dat veel mensen met een fictieve bijnaam of met een IP-adres mij met mijn voornaam aanspreken i.p.v. met mijn gebruikersnaam, ik vind dat niet prettig. Uiteraard staat het je vrij om het wel of niet te doen, maar bij de twee anderen klop ik liever niet aan. Nou ik hoor het wel. Hoi Richardkiwi, in principe is het geen probleem om te hernoemen. Echter omdat je veel bijdragen hebt zou Wikipedia vast kunnen lopen tijdens het hernoemen. Daarom moet een van de twee system administrators de hernoeming uitvoeren. Die hebben wat minder tijd en dus kan het eventjes duren voordat je verzoek wordt uitgevoerd. Je kunt een handmatig verzoek voor hernoeming indienen op deze pagina. Daar kun je in het Engels nog kort toelichten dat je meer dan 50.000 bijdragen hebt, dan zullen de stewards je verder helpen en hulp vragen aan de sysadmins. Bericht

Omdat ik toevallig met gebruiker Hansmuller op diens overlegpagina in gesprek was geraakt over door hem geüploade afbeeldingen, dacht ik het me te kunnen veroorloven hem op zijn Commons-overlegpagina te kunnen wijzen op zijn (prominente) vergissing in een artikel dat op mijn NL-volglijst staat. Toen anderen toch ingrepen, heb ik mijn bericht – waarop nog geen antwoord was gekomen – weer verwijderd. Daarna heeft Hansmuller dat bericht tweemaal op mijn NL-overlegpagina gekopieerd. Gezien jouw opmerkingen elders, lijk je te denken dat dat in opdracht van mij zou zijn geschied, en wel per e-mailverzoek, maar het bericht op Hansmuller's overlegpagina was het enige dat ik eraan heb gewijd en ik heb dan ook niet ge-e-maild. Het spijt me dat Hansmuller niet je kennelijke en duidelijke vergissing heeft willen weerspreken, zoals het me ook spijt dat hij er opmerkingen over mijn 'psychologie' aan meent te moeten verbinden. Kort gezegd: ik heb geen e-mail gestuurd, ik heb niet verzocht om plaatsing van enig bericht op mijn NL-overlegpagina en ik heb dus ook geen 'misbruik' gemaakt. Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Moreover, I think even the correct category of a city would be useless to the image, if the image is a picture of people, so I undo, instead of adding the correct city. Dear Trade, yes I intend to rename all files. If you want you can put requests on group images (3 or more characters), because I am not great at thinking of names for those files. Also it would be useful to ID the characters in Category:Unidentified cosplay at Brussels Comic Con 2019 and move them to Category:Cosplay at Brussels Comic Con 2019. I think it is a combination cosplay of Belle mixed with their own fantasy. Some sort of alternative fur dress / battle dress File:2019-03-03 13-04-54 ILCE-6500 DSC01129 (46389871235).jpg. The hairstyle, the rose in the bell jar and the yellow dress make it clear this is Belle. Sometimes fur is used because her other dresses have fur, and because of beast. Senadores Brasileiros e mudanças cegas de nomes

Qual é a sua proficiência em português (do Brasil ou de Portugal) para perceber o que são nomes "ambíguos ou sem sentido" mudar nomes de ficheiros apagando informação relevante do mesmo? Tm (talk) 13:39, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

is there a specific reason for this question? Has anything been done wrong? I do not speak Portuguese. However I have done over 6500 edits on pt.wikipedia without any problems (and 300.000 in over 100 languages). I can understand that it says Senators of a certain session. As such, the name does not describe what is actually in the image, namely the person themselves. The name of the session is insufficient, ambiguous. There are dozens of names with the title official portret of 'name', which seems a more decent name, see Category:Official portraits of senators of Brazil. As such, I rename to those names, as per guidelines. I hope this answers your question.

You want to keep the extra information of which session the fotos are from. This is fine. I have no problem with this. Feel free to rename. Please note however that I was not wrong. I was following the examples. The name of the person is better than only a session. I agree that session + name is even better.

In the future, if you have a problem with any of my work, please say so, instead of saying I do not understand. The problem is not language. As I indicate, I fully understand what it says.

I'm a native speaker of Portuguese. I asked the renaming. The current names don't say anything about the persons in the images. You are a native speaker of Portuguese as i am also a native speaker of Portuguese but i am also a Portuguese. The names you want this images to have are ambiguous as i said above.
