Elle dispose d'un territoire relativement réduit de 161 km², entièrement urbanisé. Elle compte plus d'un million d'habitants. Cette ville-région officiellement bilingue est habitée par une majorité de Belges francophones (les Belges francophones représentent 66,5% des Bruxellois selon une étude de l'ADRASS et 95,5% des habitants bruxellois sont de langue française selon le baromètre linguistique de 2006) et par une minorité de Communauté flamande (les Belges néerlandophones représentent 5,3% de la population bruxelloise selon l'ADRASS, le néerlandais est parlé par 28,23% des Bruxellois selon le baromètre linguistique de 2006). Elle est composée de 19 communes autonomes, comparables en nombre d'habitants aux 20 arrondissements parisiens mais sans un bourgmestre "commun" à l'ensemble. Nederlands Brussel - Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest Het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest is één van de drie gewesten van België. Het omvat 19 gemeenten met een totale oppervlakte van 161 km2. Het aantal inwoners is 1.018.804. De gemiddelde bevolkingsdichtheid bedraagt 6312 inwoners per km2. Het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest valt samen met het tweetalige gebied Brussel-Hoofdstad of het arrondissement Brussel-Hoofdstad. De instellingen houden rekening met zowel Nederlandstaligen als Franstaligen, al heeft een sterke meerderheid van de bevolking Frans als eerste taal. De Vlaamse en de Franse Gemeenschap van België oefenen er hun bevoegdheden uit voor alle persoonsgebonden materies: namelijk taal, cultuur, onderwijs en welzijns- en gezondheidszorg. English Brussels - Brussels-Capital Region The Brussels-Capital Region is one of the three regions of ► Belgium, while the French Community of Belgium and the Flemish Community do exercise, each for their part, their cultural competencies on the territory of the region. French and Dutch are the official languages ; all public services are bilingual. The Capital Region is predominantly French-speaking, about 95% of the population are French-speakers (including migrants), and about 5% are Dutch-speakers. It is completely surrounded by ► Flanders.
