IUCIPRS

History

The Inter University Centre for IPR Studies is an autonomous institution established by the Government of Kerala in Cochin University of Science and Technology. The main objective of IUCIPRS is to evolve into a research hub and resource centre of international repute and to act as a think tank in the area of IPR and related subjects. The main activities of the Centre include policy research support to both Central and State Governments, supporting/assisting Government of India in international negotiations, conducting extensive research in intellectual property related areas, conducting different types of academic programmes.

Governing Structure of IUCIPRS

The IUCIPRS came into existence by the constitution of its first Governing Council by the Government of Kerala vide G.O. (Ms) No. 348/10/H.Edn. dated l3/10/20I0.This was further modified by G.O (Ms) No.235/11/ H.Edn. dated 23/09/ 2011. The powers of the Governing Council were approved by the Government of Kerala by its letter No.35733/B2/10/H.Edn dated 10/12/2010 which also decided to transfer the funds for the Centre from Government of Kerala to the Accounts of the IUCIPRS through CUSAT. The first meeting of the Governing Council approved the Regulation for the functioning of the Centre and constituted the Executive Committee of the Centre with five members. There is also a Faculty Committee comprising of the Director and all faculty members of the Centre to take care of the academic activities of the Centre. The Executive Committee also constituted a Technical Committee on Construction with one of its members as Chairman to look into the construction activities of the Centre.

Objectives of the Centre

The main objective of IUCIPRS is to evolve into a research hub and resource centre of international repute and to act as a think tank in the area of IPR and related subjects. It is meant to be a place facilitating interaction among researchers from different universities and research institutions in India and abroad. IUCIPRS aims at facilitating multidisciplinary teaching and research in the area of IPR and related subjects.

About CUSAT

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) was initially constituted as the University of Cochin through an Act of Kerala Government on 10th July 1971. The University of Cochin was re‐constituted as Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in February 1986, redefining its objectives as "promoting Graduate and Post‐Graduate studies and Advanced Research in Applied Sciences, Technology, Industry, Commerce, Management and Social Sciences." CUSAT is now a world-ranking university with the specific purpose of developing higher education, emphasizing post-graduate studies and research in applied science, technology, industry, humanities, and commerce. CUSAT has consecutively been figured in the Times Higher Education World Ranking since 2017. The Times ranks around 1500 best universities worldwide annually with around 60 universities from India out of 967. CUSAT has also found a place in the QS World University Ranking and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the India Government.

Programms

The main activities of the Centre include policy research support to both Central and State Governments, supporting/assisting Government of India in international negotiations, conducting extensive research in intellectual property related areas, conducting different types of academic programmes including full time Ph.D programmes with fellowships, facilitating multi-disciplinary research, undertaking post graduate courses for students of School of Legal Studies and for students from Science, Technology and Management disciplines of CUSAT, short-time fellowships for students from other universities who have registered for Ph.D on any IP related areas, visiting fellowships for eminent academics from India and abroad giving them an opportunity to associate with IUCIPRS by engaging in teaching and research.

Admission

Five Year Intergrated dual Degree Programme (syllabus) with an approved intake of 5 students each stated in 2013. In addition to this, we also organize various seminars, conferences and workshops on emerging issues on Intellectual Property Law and conduct training programmes for judges, professionals, scientists, students of other Universities in India etc. The Centre also extends support to scientists, industrialists and other technical experts from CUSAT and outside in obtaining different forms of IP protection. The Centre has been undertaking various research projects and publishing books and research papers from 2003 onwards.

Students

Centre stated the multidisciplinary research programme (Ph.D) in February 2011 and admitted seven students till 2015. These students are from the disciplines of Law, Political Science, Management and Anthroplogy. One student is from Kenya on ICCR Fellowship. Five other students are also registed with the Faculty of the Centre out of which 4 were awarded Ph.D.
