Cubs Place Matt Szczur On DL, Call Up Ryan Kalish

(CBS) The Cubs have placed outfielder Matt Szczur on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right hamstring strain and recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Iowa in his place.

Szczur left in the fifth inning of Monday's win in Pittsburgh with right hamstring tightness after scoring a run on a throwing error. He's hitting .367 with two homers and 10 RBIs in 30 at-bats, serving as the team's fourth outfielder most of the time. Szczur had been in line for more playing time in the present as starting right fielder Jason Heyward sat out Monday evening with right wrist soreness. Heyward isn't in the starting lineup Tuesday evening either, with Kris Bryant getting the nod there.

The 28-year-old Kalish last played in the big leagues in 2014, when he hit .248 in 128 at-bats for the Cubs. He's hitting .368 with a .980 OPS in 20 games at Triple-A this season.

To make room for Kalish on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred infielder Christian Villanueva to the 60-day disabled list.
