Thomas Samuel Zilly is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. He joined the court in 1988 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.

Early life and education

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Zilly graduated from the University of Michigan with his bachelor's degree in 1956 and from Cornell Law School with his J.D. in 1962.[1]

Military service

Zilly served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1956 to 1962.[1]

Zilly was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on February 16, 1988, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington vacated by Judge Walter McGovern. Hearings on Zilly's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 28, 1988, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) on behalf of then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on April 15, 1988. Zilly was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on April 19, 1988, and he received his commission the next day. Zilly elected to take senior status beginning on January 1, 2004. He was succeeded in this position by Judge James Robart.[1][2]
