Peter Hill Beer was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter (D). Beer assumed senior status on April 12, 1994. His service ended on February 9, 2018, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

Peter Beer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He earned a bachelor's degree from Tulane University in 1949. He earned an LL.B. from University Law School in 1952.[1]

Military service

Beer served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant from 1945 to 1946. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a captain and as a judge advocate from 1952 to 1955.[1]

Professional career

In 1974, Beer became a judge with the Louisiana Court of Appeals from 1974 to 1979. In 1978, Beer was elected to the Louisiana Supreme Court and served one year until his appointment to the federal bench in 1979.[1]

Prior to joining the court, Beer was a private practice attorney licensed in the State of Louisiana from 1955 to 1974.[1]

Beer served on the New Orleans City Council from 1969 to 1974. He served as a vice president from 1972 to 1974, and as the Council's Acting president from 1973 to 1974.[1]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Louisiana

Beer was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on October 11, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Beer was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 26, 1979, on a senate vote and received commission on November 27, 1979. Beer assumed senior status on April 12, 1994.[1]
