Public safety Education Economic Development

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Education Health care

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My father because he led by example. He was always in service to others. He never asked for credit for the things he did to help not only friends and neighbors, but also complete strangers. He taught his children to put the effort in to get the job done correctly the first time. He was humble and kind, but to me he was a giant among men.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

1776 by David Mc Cullough because it showed how a few brave people who believed in their core that they were fighting for what was right could change the world.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, forward thinking, good listener.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am solution oriented. Throughout my 25 years of service at the city, I was able to develop win-win solutions to address needs of residents and business owners that also furthered City goals. I also have the attributes mentioned above.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To set policy to manage the growth of the city, including infrastructure, amenities and maintaining quality of life for residents. To be a good steward of public funds. To promote the City to expand our economic base.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I would like to leave office with a diversified economy, and an improved education system with partnerships between schools and businesses so that our kids graduate high school with an understanding of the wide variety of career opportunities available to them. Finally, I would like for Henderson residents, including my grandchildren to have the highest quality of life possible.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The first historical event that an impact on me was when Reagan was shot. I was in the 8th grade and remember being stunned that someone would want to harm our president.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Clark County Sanitation District summer hire. I was sixteen. They liked me and the work I did, so I stayed there for two years.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas because my family is always together and it brings kids so much joy.

Service on the boards of other entities, such as the Health District or Southern NV Water Authority.

What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?

Expertise in planning and development is helpful because that is what broadens your tax base when it is done prudently and helps to pay for amenities such as parks, recreation facilities, and trails that improve quality of life.

What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the local government?

City Council is often the first direct contact between citizens and government. It’s important that there be trust in that relationship as it has the most direct impact on residents.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?

I believe it is beneficial so that it doesn’t take as long for the newly elected person to understand how a city operates, who are the staff and what are their areas of expertise, what have been past issues and how we’re they addressed, etc.
