Kimberly J. Mueller is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. She was appointed to this position on March 10, 2010, by President Barack Obama (D) and was confirmed by the Senate on December 16, 2010.[1] Mueller served as chief judge of the court from 2020 to 2024. She assumed senior status on September 17, 2024.[2] Dena Coggins was nominated by President Joe Biden (D) to replace Mueller on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California on February 8, 2024.[3]

Previously, Mueller served as a federal magistrate judge in the Eastern District of California from March 28, 2003.[4]

Mueller was the first woman to serve as a district judge for the Eastern District of California.[5]

Education

Mueller received a B.A. degree from Pomona College in 1981 and a J.D. degree from Stanford Law School in 1995.[4]

On March 10, 2010, Judge Mueller was nominated to serve on the federal bench of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California by President President Obama. Mueller was recommended by Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer. Mueller was nominated to fill the seat vacated by Judge Frank Damrell.[7]

Mueller's appointment was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 16, 2010.[1]

Mueller served as chief judge of the court from 2020 to 2024.[2]

Mueller assumed senior status on September 17, 2024.[2]
