Harold Lloyd Murphy was a federal judge with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1977 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter (D). He assumed senior status on March 31, 2017. His judicial service ended on December 28, 2022, upon his death. Prior to his appointment, Murphy was a judge on the 7th Superior Court District of Georgia.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Haralson County, Georgia, in 1927, Murphy graduated from the University of Georgia School of Law with his LL.B. in 1949.[1]

Murphy served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946.[1]

Judicial career

Northern District of Georgia

Murphy was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on July 7, 1977, to a seat vacated by James Hill. Murphy was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 28, 1977, and he received his commission on July 29, 1977. Murphy elected to take senior status beginning on March 31, 2017.[1]
