Gregory Moneta Sleet was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. He first joined the court in 1998 after an appointment by President Bill Clinton (D). He assumed senior status on May 1, 2017, and retired from the court on September 29, 2018.

Sleet served as chief judge of the court from 2007 to 2014.[1]

Early life and education

A native of New York, New York, Sleet graduated from Hampton University with his bachelor's degree in 1973 and from Rutgers School of Law with his J.D. in 1976.[1]

Sleet was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Delaware by President Bill Clinton on January 27, 1998, to a seat vacated by Joseph Longobardi. The American Bar Association rated Sleet Substantial Majority Qualified or Well Qualified, Minority Not Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Sleet's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 18, 1998, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on March 26, 1998. Sleet was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on April 27, 1998, and he received his commission on April 30, 1998. Sleet served as chief judge of the district court from 2007 to 2014. He elected to take senior status beginning on May 1, 2017. She retired from the court on September 29, 2018.[1][2][3]

Judge Sleet presided in the trial of Thomas Pendelton, who was found guilty of traveling out of the nation to have sex with an underage girl. On February 3, 2010, he sentenced Pendleton to thirty years in prison, ten more than what the federal guidelines required.[4]
