Frank Whitney is a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. He joined the court in 2006 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Whitney served as chief judge from 2013 to 2020.[1]

Early life and education

A native of North Carolina, Whitney graduated from Wake Forest University with his bachelor's degree in 1982 and later graduated from the University of North Carolina with his J.D. and master's in business administration degree in 1987.[1]

Military service

Whitney began serving as a reservist in the US Army in 1982.[1]

Professional career

Whitney started out as a private practice attorney licensed in the District of Columbia from 1987 to 1988 and 1989 to 1990. From 1988 to 1989, Whitney was a law clerk for Judge David Sentelle in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1990, Whitney joined the U.S. Attorney's Office as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina from 1990 to 2001 before re-entering private practice work licensed in the State of North Carolina from 2001 to 2002. In 2002, Whitney was nominated by President George W. Bush (R) as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina. Whitney served as the lead federal prosecutor for the Eastern region of North Carolina until joining the court.[1]

Judicial career

Western District of North Carolina

On the recommendation of North Carolina U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole, Whitney was nominated by President George W. Bush on February 14, 2006, to a seat vacated by Judge Brent McKnight. Whitney was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 22, 2006, on a Senate vote and received commission on July 5, 2006.[1]
