- "Malefic, you can bring peace to Mars for the first time in hundreds of years. We can start anew. You were never meant to be the pariah, Malefic. You were meant to be the promise."
- "Thank you, my brother. I will strive to make you proud. And to end what I helped start."
- —J'onn J'onzz and Malefic J'onzz on the latter's true destiny[src]
Malefic "Mal" J'onzz is the son of the late M'yrnn J'onzz and the brother of J'onn J'onzz. In the past, Malefic betrayed the Green Martians during the civil war and helped the White Martians kill his own kind. For that, the council sent him into the Phantom Zone and wiped any memory of him from the collective consciousness. Centuries later, the Monitor freed Malefic and set him loose on Earth to seek vengeance on his brother, as a way to test J'onn to ensure that the latter would be ready for the Anti-Monitor Crisis.
Biography[]
Original multiverse[]
Early life[]
When they were children, Malefic and his older brother J'onn played together with some other kids, but Mal was unable to connect to the Martian hive-mind, after an outburst, their father, M'yrnn decided he was a danger and locked him away, he grew older and resentful and eventually sided with the White Martians. M'yrnn was devastated and J'onn erased Malefic from both of their memories.[1]
Martian Civil War[]
During the Martian Civil War, Malefic betrayed the Green Martians by inflicting H'ronmeer's curse, Fa'ra'too'rik, upon them, which caused severe pain to any brothers who fought each other, due to his traitorous actions, Malefic was placed in the Phantom Zone. Either during the Martian Civil War or inside the Phantom Zone, he met Midnight.[2][3]
Arrival on Earth[]
Sometime after Supergirl's war against Lex Luthor concluded, Mar Novu brought Malefic to Earth. He then vowed to get revenge on his brother, J'onn J'onzz.[4] However, this was later proven to be a test for J'onn to prepare him for the coming crisis.[5]
War against his brother[]
At some point after his arrival on earth, he disguised himself as a little girl and during this time, he created a phantom zone projector to release Midnight. After Midnight's defeat at the hands of Supergirl and J'onn, Malefic confronted him in his office and then he told him that they were brothers, but J'onn didn't believe him, claiming that his memories of Malefic were erased from his mind.[3]
After attempting to murder multiple people as part of his revenge against his brother, Malefic set his sights on Kelly Olsen when he discovered she can see his true form despite his shape-shifting.[1] During another one of his conflicts against the D.E.O. and his brother, he was caught by the Phantom Zone projector and transported away. He was relieved to discover he was not back in the Phantom Zone. However, Malefic was discouraged when he realized that he was a prisoner of Lena Luthor. Lena holds him captive to study Q-Waves.[6]
Prisoner of Lena Luthor and redemption[]
While trapped inside, Malefic came face-to-face with his brother. J'onn then apologized to him, and they both agreed to a mind meld in order to determine each other's true intent. After realizing the mistake he has made, he was no longer angry with his brother.[7] After escaping, Malefic was held captive by the D.E.O. again. There, he confessed to his brother what happened and how Lena helped him captive. Malefic admitted she was never violent, and her only purpose was creating peace, even if she had to force it on everyone. He agreed to help, and using his own personal kinetic energy against Lena's machine, he was able to stop her from mind-controlling the rest of the planet. After, J'onn re-introduced him to his ship (shape-shifting car) to travel back to Mars and help M'gann M'orzz with the civil war. Unbeknownst to him, Mar Novu admitted he released Malefic from the Phantom Zone as a test for J'onn, to prepare for the crisis.[5]
Anti-Monitor Crisis[]
During the Anti-Monitor Crisis, Malefic as well as everyone in the multiverse except for the seven Paragons, was killed in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, 2019,[8] only to be restored a month later, after the Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.[9]
New multiverse[]
At some point in the history of Earth-Prime, Malefic was on Earth where he impersonated Pete Andrews, but, thanks to J'onn J'onzz, he returned to Mars.[10]
Peace maker[]
After the universe was restored by The Spectre, M'gann revealed that he was on the path of ending the Civil War on Mars by opening a dialog between the factions.[10]
Malefic sent M'gann M'orzz to Earth to help stop the growth of a sun-eater.[11]
J'onn contacted Malefic about the Phantom Zone because Supergirl became trapped there.[12] Malefic revealed that he had heard about Silas White, originally from Transilvane, who was able to transverse the dimension and return.[13]
Personality[]
Malefic used to be an innocent carefree child who loved his father, M'yrnn J'onzz and his brother, J'onn J'onzz dearly.
But unfortunately, Malefic's inability to connect with the Martian hive mind lead him to suffer. Locked away in isolation he believed that both his father and brother were ashamed of him, unaware that they actually still loved him and the reason why they locked him up was in a misguided attempt to protect him and the other Green Martians.
Eventually, Malefic felt nothing but rage and hatred towards his family, and became supportive of the White Martians' crusade against them, this rage of his also extended to his own race, as he was killing several other innocent Green Martian children; even after years of being trapped in the Phantom Zone, Malefic's rage didn't diminish at all and was only further amplified.
Malefic was crafty in trying to kill J'onzz, but was unable to do it directly; because of the martian curse that would affect both brothers, he instead used humans as his pawns, even disposing of them if it meant his brother would die in the process, displaying a callous nature to the lives of humans.
But Malefic was willing to aid humans with their plans if it meant getting closer to his revenge against J'onzz, as seen with him making a deal with Lena Luthor. Deep down, Malefic did have positive traits as once he saw that his brother still loved him and and regretted how he treated him; even after what Malefic put him through and only locked him up to protect him, he saw the error of his ways and chose to forgive J'onn. After Lena nearly completed her plan with Non Nocere, Malefic used his telepathic powers to drive the signal back and saved Earth's population, thus redeeming himself.
After Malefic had learned that Mars was still in a state of civil war, he decided to go there to bring peace to the world, as he parted ways on good terms; with his brother, J'onn; proving that he once again loves his brother dearly.
Powers and abilities[]
Powers[]
- Green Martian physiology: Like all Green Martians, Malefic possesses extraordinary powers. But he is unique for a Green Martian; as his eyes glow green; instead of red.[3]
- Shapeshifting: Malefic is able to change his form at will, even on a cellular level, completely altering his physical appearance, allowing him to transform or mimic other people or animals and other creatures, regardless of the size or mass difference relative to Malefic's true form. He was able to transform into something as small as a little girl or buzzing fly as well as something as massive as a dinosaur.[3]
- Super strength: Like Kryptonians, Malefic possesses greater strength than that of normal humans. Malefic easily surpassed Supergirl with his own super strength in T-Rex's disguise tossing around Kara and perforating her cape with extreme ease.[3] Malefic had the strength to throw a car into the air.
- Accelerated healing factor: When Supergirl used her heat vision on Malefic, he reconstitute himself back into Alex’s form.
- Invulnerability: Malefic easily endured Supergirl's punches (but likely was holding back because she thought it is a normal dinosaur) and freeze breath.[2] Malefic could withstand Supergirl’s heat vision. Although his human form was burned away, but his alien form underneath was solid.
- Poison inducement: When Malefic was on Mars, he was seen affecting the entire Green Martian race with H'ronmeer's Curse. This caused him to be tried by the High Counsel and sentencing him to the Phantom Zone due to his alliance with the White Martians. [2]
- Density-shifting/Intangibility: As a Green Martian, Malefic is able to move through solid objects (such as walls and doors).[2]
- Mind control: Malefic has the ability to enter an individual's mind, thereby manipulating the person to his will. He can project his consciousness into and overshadow the target to do things they wouldn't normally do. This ability was taken from him in the Phantom Zone,[2] but he later tricked Kelly Olsen into using Q-waves on him, which reset his brain and restored this power.[1]
- Remote Possession: As an added benefit of his mind control, Malefic was able to mentally possess Eve Tesmaucher, and use her to threaten Lena Luthor.
- Super speed: When Malefic shapeshifted into Alex Danvers, he used his incredible speed trying to escape from Supergirl.[2]
- Flight: Malefic is able to fly.[2]
Abilities[]
- Expert hand-to-hand combatant: Malefic is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant.[2]
- Expert of deception/Manipulator: As his shape-shifting powers replicate the physical form and voice of a person, Malefic must instead rely on natural acting.[1]
- Bilingual: As a native Martian, Malefic speaks his mother tongue fluently[4] in addition to English.[3]
Weaknesses[]
- Fire: Like all Martians, if Malefic is exposed to fire (or even Kryptonian heat vision) while transformed, it will cause him to partially revert to his true appearance, which may be used as a means to reveal him as an impostor.[2]
- Limited telepathy: Originally, apart from lacking the capacity to psychically connect with his fellow Martians, Malefic had all the general capacities of telepathy as the rest of his kind, including sensing people's presence, communicating mentally, and entering minds to extract information or alter them. However, he lost most of his telepathic capabilities when he was in the Phantom Zone. This also means that his ability to learn about people he impersonates has been extremely diminished, severely limiting the effectiveness of his shape-shifting abilities, allowing someone who knows that person well enough to tell that he's a fraud.[2]
- Lack of hive mind: Malefic lacks the natural Martian ability to connect to the Martian collective; instead, he's able to affect it and hurt those around him.[1]
- Fa'ra'too'rik: As explained by J'onn, long ago on Mars, two brothers, Phobos and Deimos, had a hatred for one another that was the reason for the Green and White Martians' split. To keep this from ever happening again, a curse was placed upon the Green Martians, known among them as Fa'ra'too'rik. It's the punishment for brother attacking brother, and causes great pain to both parties involved, as seen when J'onn and Malefic fought each other.[2]
Equipment[]
- Spaceship/Car: J'onn lent his brother his spaceship so he could go back to Mars. It also doubles as a car, allowing it to easily blend in and drive on Earth.[5]
