Planet formation scenarios.
Abstract
The author reviews theoretical models for the formation of pulsars with planet-mass companions. He first summarizes observational constraints a succesful model has to fulfill and discusses potential tests of the models. The author then assesses the merits and uncertainties of the various models in the context of the putative planet pulsar PSR 1257+12. The models considered include: (1) planet survival model; (2) planet capture model; (3) massive binary model; (4) fall-back model; (5) WD + WD or WD + NS merger; (6) Be binary model; (7) TZ˙O deflation model; (8) evaporation model; (9) disrupted companion model; (10) circumbinary disk model; (11) ablation scenario; (12) disk-capture scenario; (13) overmassive WD scenario. At the moment, several of the models appear to be consistent with the available constraints.
