Fotokimia adalah bagian dari ilmu kimia yang mempelajari interaksi antara atom, molekul kecil, dan cahaya (atau radiasi elektromagnetik).[1][2] Sebagaimana disiplin ilmu lainnya, fotokimia menggunakan sistem satuan SI atau metrik. Unit dan konstanta yang sering dipergunakan antara lain adalah meter, detik, hertz, joule, mol, konstanta gas R, serta konstanta Boltzmann. Semua unit dan konstanta ini juga merupakan bagian dari bidang kimia fisik.

Hukum Grotthuss–Draper dan hukum Stark-Einstein

Fotoeksitasi merupakan tahap pertama dalam proses fotokimia yang mana reaktan dinaikkan ke keadaan energi yang lebih tinggi, yaitu keadaan tereksitasi.[3] Hukum pertama dalam fotokimia, yaitu hukum Grotthuss-Draper oleh ahli kimia Theodor Grotthuss dan John W. Draper, menyatakan bahwa cahaya harus diserap oleh zat kimia agar reaksi fotokimia dapat terjadi. Sedangkan menurut hukum kedua fotokimia, yaitu hukum Stark-Einstein oleh fisikawan Johannes Stark dan Albert Einstein, menyatakan bahwa untuk setiap foton cahaya yang diserap oleh sistem kimia, tidak lebih dari satu molekul yang diaktifkan untuk reaksi fotokimia, seperti yang ditentukan oleh hasil kuantum.[2]

Contoh reaksi fotokimia

  • Fotosintesis : tumbuhan menggunakan energi matahari untuk mengubah karbon dioksida dan air menjadi glukosa dan oksigen.[4][5]
  • Produksi vitamin D secara alami oleh tubuh manusia ketika terkena paparan sinar matahari secara langsung. Tubuh akan memproduksi vitamin D dengan membakar kolesterol yang ada di sel kulit.[6]
  • Bioluminescence, misalnya yang terjadi pada kunang-kunang. Kunang-kunang menghasilkan reaksi kimia di dalam tubuhnya, sehingga memungkinkan tubuh mereka menyala atau menghasilkan cahaya.[7][8]
  • Fotodegradasi pada banyak zat, misalnya pada polivinil klorida dan Fp. Contohnya yaitu pada botol obat yang sering dibuat dengan kaca yang digelapkan untuk mencegah obat dari fotodegradasi.[9]
  • Cetak putih, yaitu reproduksi dokumen yang dihasilkan dengan menggunakan proses kimia diazo. Proses ini juga dikenal sebagai proses garis biru karena hasilnya adalah garis biru pada latar belakang bewarna putih.[10]
  • Teknologi fotoresis yang digunakan dalam produksi komponen mikroelektronika.
